Viagra for plants

Viagra has been widely known for a long time now. It is, perhaps, one of the most popular medications that are prescribed for fighting impotence and erectile dysfunction in men.

There is probably not a single grown up person who would not have heard about Viagra at least once in their life. As the society talks more and more about this drug the doctors and the scientists keep on researching into the abilities of this medication and try to see if it can be useful for treating anything rather than the ED.

As it turns out it really can help for various conditions and not only in people. A scientist from Israel named Ya’acov Leshem has got an idea that Viagra could have a positive effect on drooping flowers and he decided to test it.

After putting some Viagra pills into a vase with dying flowers he soon noticed something very interesting – the flowers looked healthier and fresher and stayed that way for almost a week longer than they were supposed to.

Satisfied with his discovery Leshem tries to explain why the human pills worked on flowers. Oddly enough the effect Viagra has on men is very similar to that on plants. The trick is that flowers just like people have a common denominator – nitric oxide.

This gas that is fairly common is known because of its bad reputation and it normally connected to traffic pollution but it is also a very powerful human hormone. Nitric oxide is responsible for relaxing blood vessels and increasing flow of blood in the body and that is how it is helpful in treating impotence.

Plants tend to give off this gas and this ability has been thoroughly studied by Leshem and Ron Wills from Australia. During the experiments about 40 flowers, vegetables and fruit species have been fumigated with nitric oxide.

The discoveries of these studies were very successful – many of the plant species have been able to stay fresh and healthy for almost twice longer than usual after 5-12 hours of nitric oxide treatment. The best effect has been achieved in strawberries, prepared salads and other leafy plants, but thick-skinned fruits like oranges, for instance stayed the same and no substantial improvement was visible.

Viagra and its influence on stimulating the nitric oxide could be extremely helpful and useful in flower and food industries. Viagra is cheap and easy to get, if used in low quantities it proves to be very effective and causes no side-effects in plants.

However, not everybody is optimistic and happy with the discovery, as for many years now nitric oxide has been considered dangerous if used in large quantities. Today the scientists are certain that plants are able to produce their own nitric oxide and therefore it is impossible to eliminate this gas completely. Furthermore, studies like the one described here show that if used in small amounts nitric oxide can actually be useful and healthy.

Furthermore nitric oxide can not only help plants to stay fresh longer but make their immune system stronger and help them fighting crop diseases. Daniel Klessig, a professor at a University in New Jersey says that plants use nitric oxide to kill of the invading infection and defend the safety of the plant’s life.

Another case when Viagra may be very helpful is turning plants back to life during droughts. Professor Steven Neill from Bristol is certain that he can boost the life-saving nitric oxide effect in plants that are shutting down without water supply, with the help of simple Viagra. This may not save the plants completely but may be very useful in fighting the drought side-effects in plants.

With the help of modern science new ways of using Viagra and benefitting greatly are now discovered. The effect Viagra has on plants may be extremely helpful in the century of limited water supply and major concern about the environment.
